Frequently asked questions

Incision length varies depending on your anatomy, body size, and the complexity of your surgery. Alpha Joint Replacement focuses less on making the smallest possible skin incision and more on minimizing disruption to the muscles and tendons underneath it. Our goal is an incision that is only as large as necessary to perform your joint replacement safely and accurately.
-
Alpha Joint Replacement is built around muscle-sparing surgical approaches.
With Alpha Knee, the subvastus approach is designed to preserve the quadriceps tendon and work underneath the quadriceps muscle rather than cutting through it.
With Alpha Hip, the direct anterior approach works through a natural interval between muscles in the front of the hip rather than routinely cutting or detaching major muscles to reach the hip.
We crush clutter and target pure impact.

Most patients use a walker or another assistive device immediately after surgery for safety and stability. As your strength, balance, and confidence improve, you can transition away from it. The goal is not to keep you on a walker for a predetermined amount of time, but to help you progress safely based on your recovery. That being said, most patients are off of a walker within a few days to a week.
-
Many healthy, appropriately selected Alpha Hip and Alpha Knee patients can return home the same day as surgery. Approximately 80% of our patients go home on the same day as surgery. You will need to demonstrate that you can safely walk, manage basic activities, control your pain, and meet appropriate medical criteria before leaving.

Some pain and swelling are normal after joint replacement, particularly after knee replacement. Alpha uses a multimodal pain-management strategy that addresses pain in several different ways. Our goal is not to promise a pain-free operation, but to make discomfort minimal and manageable so you can begin moving and recovering early.
-
Pain medication is generally used for the first few days during the early postoperative period and reduced as pain improves. Alpha recovery protocols emphasize multiple methods of pain control with the goal of minimizing opioid use whenever possible. Several of our patients are able to manage their pain without the use of opioids.
